Jett barreled through the deep snow, following the tracks the intruder had left behind. The frigid night air burned his throat with shallow and quick breaths. He expected the tracks to lead toward the parking lot, but instead they ascended the mountain. He pushed harder to reach the guy before he lost him. As he approached the chairlift house, he heard the motor of a snowmobile start up. Once on the slope, the snow wasnât as deep. It had been compressed and groomed for ideal skiing conditions tomorrow, but that also meant the snowmobileâs tracks werenât as obvious, especially in the dark.
Following the sound of the cranking engine, Jett ran through a cluster of trees. Branches swiped at his face, but he kept moving forward. He burst through the last of the trees just in time to see the man put the snowmobile into gear and start moving.
Jett took one giant leap and managed to grab hold of the guyâs coat. With all his strength, he held on as the snowmobile picked up speed. Jettâs fingers burned in the cold night air. He didnât know how long he could hold on, given his feet were dragging behind him and being tossed around. His chest bounced against the rear of the machine, knocking the wind out of him with each bump along the route.
As the snowmobile moved upward and the angle made climbing harder, Jett used all his strength to secure one of his feet on the back while he held onto the guyâs coat. Once there, he pushed up on that leg to gain a foothold with the other. Just as he tried to sit on the back, the guy made a sharp right that sent Jett flying through the air. For a split second, he watched the snowmobileâs taillights get farther away right before he landed on his back in a hard mound of snow.
Jett grunted on impact, then growled and threw snow in the direction of the retreating snowmobile. Higher and higher it went, to an unknown location. If that was Saul Hansen, then perhaps he wasnât staying in town at all but rather on the mountain. If he was hiding out at Wild Mountain somewhere, then opening up to skiers come sunup wouldnât be an option.
Now to get Les to understand that letting skiers on the slopes could be deadly.
Jett stood and dusted off the layer of snow from his jeans. With one last look up to where the snowmobile disappeared, he turned and headed back to the lodge. He thought about getting a team up there, but the guy would be long gone before he could round people up. Perhaps a better strategy would be to barricade the guy in place until they could find him.
For now, Jett needed to make sure Nic was okay. He picked up his pace and didnât slow until he was back inside the lodge and standing beside her.
âIs that what I think it is?â he asked, looking at a large book open in her lap.
